Google Nexus is a line of consumer electronic devices that run the Android operating system. Google manages the design, development, marketing, and support of these devices, but some development and all manufacturing are carried out by partnering original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The product family consists mostly of six smartphones and four tablet computers. As of April 2015, the devices currently available in the line are the Nexus 6 smartphone (made with Motorola Mobility), Nexus 9 tablet (made with HTC), and Nexus Player digital media player (made with Asus).

Nexus-One, manufactured by HTC was released in January 2010. Later in December, Samsung manufactured The Nexus S. The Galaxy Nexus, manufactured by Samsung, was released in November 2011 to coincide with the release of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. However the Nexus family entered into the world of Wireless Power in November 2012 with the release of Nexus-4 smartphone, manufactured by LG. The Nexus-5, manufactured by LG, succeeded Nexus-4 in the wireless charging arena in October 2013.Nexus-6, developed by Motorola Mobility, released in October 2014, is the latest smartphone from the Nexus family into the world of Wireless Charging.

The Nexus family of Tablet Computers include Nexus 7 (1st Generation: June 2012, 2nd Generation: July 2013), co-developed and manufactured by Asus, Nexus 10 (manufactured by Samsung) released in October 2012 and Nexus 9 (co developed with HTC) introduced in October 2014. These Tablet Computers are wireless charging enabled compatible with the Qi (pronounced “chee”) Wireless Charging standards.

Wireless Charging, based on the principle of inductive power transfer or magnetic resonance, charges the smartphone by just placing it over the wireless charging pad or surface. Many mobile devices in the global market support Qi wireless charging. Qi is an interface standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) for inductive electrical power transfer. Wireless charging pads eliminates the need of charging cables thereby offering a lot of convenience to the end user.

Nexus branded their Qi compatible Wireless Charger as “ORB” and released it during the same year when Nexus-4 was introduced. The ORB wireless charging pad draws power from the outlet through the USB and with its small form factor, can easily fit in with any other objects you have on a desk or night stand.

ORB (as shown in Figure 1), designed by LG, has magnet on the front to hold Nexus-4 in place no matter how the device is placed on it. The outside is a matte plastic that feels quite good to touch, and easy to grip. The bottom rim is also rubber, so the Orb wireless charger won’t slide around on your desk. The outer front rim is a smooth hard plastic, and the rest of the front face is a somewhat sticky rubber. The rubber makes dropping your Nexus 4 onto the Orb wireless charging pad soundless, and smooth, but it is also prone to picking up dirt and dust.

Though the device is well designed, solidly-made, and offers freedom from fumbling with USB cables, the only issue with Orb Wireless charger is its price. As the Nexus family increased, the latest smartphones / tablet computers had the issues wrt placing the smartphones/tablet computers on Orb as the alignment of coils would differ and placing the smartphone became very tough.

PowerSquare, an innovative start-up in the field of power electronics, have developed a Qi compatible wireless charging pad called as TANGO, which is world’s first position- free multi device wireless charger.

TANGO, a Qi compatible wireless charger, based on the principle of inductive coupling can handle up to 10W of power to charge two devices wirelessly at the same time. TANGO can charge two Nexus 4/5/6 smartphones wirelessly at the same time as shown in Figure 2. TANGO can be considered to be the best wireless charger for the Nexus family because it charges not only two smartphones simultaneously but also can charge a tablet computer and a smartphone wirelessly at the same time as shown in Figure 3. Thus the whole Nexus family can be charged wirelessly with TANGO. PowerSquare introduced TANGO wireless charging pad to the world this September and you can grab your TANGO at: and avail the promotional offer using the promo code “fnf20”.
